A Message From NSEA President Dawn Etcheverry

In those tough days in education, remembering "your why" can be a powerful anchor, reminding you of the profound impact your role has on a child's life. Whether you're a teacher, lunch person, secretary, administrator, counselor, custodian, or bus driver, your contribution is vital to the child's overall experience and growth. Every role in education plays a unique part in creating a supportive and enriching environment, helping students feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn. Keeping in mind the difference you make—whether it's through a kind word, a smile, or a moment of understanding—can help you push through the challenges and stay focused on the essential purpose of your work: fostering the well-being and success of every child you encounter.
I was led to teaching because of the profound impact my next-door neighbor, Mrs. Legge, had on my life as my piano teacher. Her kindness, patience, and unwavering support ignited my love for music and left an indelible mark on me. Mrs. Legge saw my genuine desire to learn and never wavered in her encouragement, always treating me with respect and never speaking down to me. Her dedication and compassionate approach to teaching inspired me to pursue a path where I could offer the same positive influence to my own students. I hope to embody her qualities, creating a nurturing environment where every student feels valued and inspired to grow.
As the president of the Nevada State Education Association, my goal this year is to ensure that every educator in our state reconnects with their "why" and recognizes their intrinsic value, both within our organization and in the broader community. I am committed to fostering a deep sense of worth among educators, highlighting their crucial role in shaping young minds and supporting their overall development. By affirming their significance and celebrating their daily contributions, I aim to inspire a renewed sense of purpose and pride in their work. My mission is to empower every educator to see themselves not only as a vital part of our association but as a cornerstone of the community, making a lasting impact on the lives of the children they serve.

Last month, we held our first board meeting with our new NSEA Board. Part of the meeting was focused on how each member represents an important piece of the public education and union puzzle. Each member was given a piece of a puzzle to write their why for 24/25 on the back. We built the puzzle together to form the NSEA logo symbolizing that while we all have a different why, our collective voice is stronger for our students and their well-being, the funding they need, as well as better pay and benefits that keep dedicated educators in our schools.
Our Board members shared some amazing stories about why they got involved in public education and their union. From wanting to be a part of a system that helped their own children succeed, to being a part of the lunchroom that serves our kids nutritious meals, each one of us has that why.
Now, we’d love to hear about your why for 24/25. Whether it’s why you went into public education, got involved with your union, or your goals for the new school year, We’d love to hear your why for 24/25!
Share your why for 24/25!
