Memo: NSEA Supports SB 132 If Amended

NSEA will support SB 132 if amended to include additional resources for the successful implementation of the program.
Published: February 22, 2017

The Nevada State Education Association, representing 40,000 teachers and education support professionals across Nevada, believes that every Nevada student deserves a quality public education. NSEA appreciates the intent of SB 132 to assist high school students behind on graduation requirements by developing individual graduation plans. However, given how stretched resources are now across the public education system, NSEA believes that additional resources need to be provided to make this program successful.

NSEA members, both teachers, and counselors engage in the type of work envisioned in SB 132 every day. However, working to develop and implement a new component of education for certain students in the individual graduation plan, along with the additional instruction time required with up to 18-month extension of high school education, will certainly require additional resources. NSEA is interested in working the sponsor of this legislation to identify those resources to set up individual graduation plans for success.
