A strong education in social studies teaches students to be better citizens. It is not just foundational for education, it’s critical to building a better society. According to the National Council for the Social Studies, “The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.”
Geography is an important component of social studies, studying how place impacts why the modern world works the way it does. Offering Geography in the 9th grade would set students up for greater success in World History. Crafted by a teacher, AB330 meets an important need while not creating significant burdens on students or teachers. AB330 would not add new requirements or certifications for teachers, increase the total credits required for graduation, or take away the ability of students to take electives.
