NSEA has supported increasing training requirements for school board members, including supporting AB451 in 2017. However, language in SB65 creates unnecessary barriers to participation and public service on school boards.
While school boards clearly have been targeted and subject to greater scrutiny in recent years, problems related to the service of school board members have not been any more severe than those seen on other local government boards or in the state legislature, where requirements to hold office are similar to existing requirements for service on school boards. NSEA is open to language in the amendment to increase the required amount of training for school board members.
