Educators have been calling on our leaders to Invest in Nevada for years, and now is the time to take bold steps to meet our state’s needs. While the American Rescue Plan is providing much needed relief during our current crisis, we know this money is just a temporary patch to our larger problem — a lack of new and progressive revenue for our schools.
We need our leaders to have the courage to stand up and demand new, progressive revenue to move Nevada up from the bottom of the education funding lists. We believe our Legislature has the opportunity this session to advance a package of revenue proposals to take a big and bold step to address our funding challenge.
- AJR1 would generate nearly half a billion dollars in new revenue for Nevada by increasing the mining tax from 5% of net proceeds to 7.75% of gross proceeds. This is the right sized treatment of an industry that has enjoyed a sweetheart deal since Nevada’s beginnings. The Legislature should vote to place AJR1 on the ballot to Let Nevadans Vote!
- SB346 would create a new tax on the sale of certain digital products. This bill will modernize Nevada’s tax structure, keeping up with the changing economy, and is a key more path to additional revenue.
The past year, educators have chanted “Be Brave. Be Bold. New Revenue’s the Way to Go.” We have been mobilizing for new revenue as we have experienced millions in painful cuts to our schools. Now is the time.
