Court Decision to Account for Members’ Dues Dollars is Win for Members

CCEA must be more transparent with dues dollars and common-sense bylaws will go to vote.

(Las Vegas, NV) – A Clark County Education Association (CCEA) loss before a Las Vegas District Court Judge is a win for members moving one step closer to dues transparency. Monday, April 23, 2018, a Las Vegas District Court Judge locked members’ dues CCEA is holding in a restricted account and ruled it cannot be dispersed without court approval. The court ordered an accounting and regular reporting to both the Nevada State Education Association (NSEA) and the court on how much dues is collected and placed in the special account.

This win in the courts means dues dollars collected by CCEA on behalf of NSEA and the National Education Association (NEA) cannot be spent without Judge approval.

The court also ruled CCEA’s last-minute injunction to prohibit NSEA passing bylaws at its Delegate Assembly this weekend and forcing NSEA to accommodate members not in good standing to attend the DA on short notice won’t be heard until May 2018. The vote for member-proposed, common-sense bylaws to take place at the 50th Annual Delegate Assembly, April 27-28, 2018 will go forward.

In January 2018, the Court cleared the way for a lawsuit against CCEA to move forward. The suit brings justice to thousands of Clark County teachers and education professionals. CCEA has been illegally withholding dues from NSEA and NEA since September 2017, denying members the protections and benefits they signed up for through membership to NSEA and NEA. The lawsuit’s counts include theft, unjust enrichment, fraud and breach of contract.
