NSEA Applauds Introduction of the Safe and Supportive Schools Act

(Carson City, NV)—May 27, 2019. Today, the Nevada Senate Democrats, under the leadership of Senator Nicole Cannizzaro, introduced The Safe and Supportive Schools Act, which would direct approximately $100 million in funding into Nevada’s public education system.

“We are pleased with the introduction of this bill, which will maintain business tax rates so Nevada can continue its efforts to sufficiently fund public education,” said Ruben Murillo, President of the Nevada State Education Association. “The Safe and Supportive Schools Act will allocate an additional $30 million to school safety; an additional $63 million to Zoom and Victory programs that have a proven impact; and an additional $4 Million for Pre-K programs. That’s great news and should be applauded.”

This past Saturday, the Senate and Assembly voted to increase the K-12 education base funding by $62.2 million. This also included inflationary considerations for the first time in years. Today, the Senate voted on SB545 to redirect marijuana tax revenue from the Rainy Day Fund to the Distributive School Account (DSA). Nevada lawmakers are taking significant steps in the right direction, and it should be recognized and applauded. NSEA looks forward to continuing our work with elected leaders to deliver the new and additional revenues necessary to adequately fund Nevada public schools.
