NSEA Reacts to Governor’s Announcement of Ruling Out Raises and Step Increases
The budget cuts the Governor is proposing for education takes things to an all-time low! Never in recent history have we had to consider these types of cuts to education—state leaders have never let it get this far.
This shows the Governor’s lack of commitment to education. Voters overwhelmingly showed support to increasing K-12 public education funding in the last election and clearly this Governor is not in touch with what the people want.
It is irresponsible to propose to ignore legal contracts which have been honored for decades—this is exactly what not funding step increases would do. NSEA looks forward to working with the legislature to find an acceptable, responsible solution to this budget crisis.

IRS Regulations to Affect Employee Pensions Put on Hold
Earlier last year the IRS issued final regulations that would change the way public employee pensions were to be taxed here in Nevada. Taking away the decision from the state, the IRS was going to demand that Nevada require a certain age requirement for retirement. Instead of going with a “years of service” determination which is in current law, the IRS was regulating that no matter how many years a public employee put in, they would be heavily penalized for choosing to retire before the age of 62. This disturbed the NEA and the NSEA greatly as we looked to reach out and change this regulation before it began to take effect in 2009.
